As A Live music fan There Is No Greater Feeling Than Watching Your Favourite Band Live On Stage, But Why Do So Many People Get Criticised For Wishing To Watch Their Favourite Band On A Regular Basis?

As an enthusiastic music fan, I love nothing more than going to experience my favourite bands when they play live. In recent times I’ve travelled all over the UK to follow the bands that I love most, and have even ventured over to Ireland and mainland Europe a few times. On quite a few occasions, I’ve actually booked tickets for a whole tour of approximately ten or twelve dates and had an amazing road trip with a friend to go to them all.

There are many people who suggest that doing this kind of thing is a bit strange, but I always ask them if they find it strange that someone would go and follow a football team at every match they play, and as we all know, there are countless people all around the world who do exactly that. And not many people query why they do it! To be honest, I don’t honestly care what other people think about it. So many people have hobbies that are of no interest to me, so why do I deserve to be rebuked for doing something that I get so much pleasure from?

So, when my favourite artist confirms some dates, the first thing me and my friend do is to consult our diaries and hope for the best with our bank balances. Finance is always the largest obstacle, as a really good road trip is not just about the expense of tickets, but transport and hotel costs too. If the tour appears to be within our budget, then holiday from work needs to be booked. And we do figure that if we decide to go to a gig straight after work and then travel back home afterwards, anything under two hours travelling each way is quite reasonable.

From then onwards it’s all about identifying hotels in the places we have to use them, booking them online, finding maps of any venues that we don’t already know, and then we’re just about ready to to rock and roll – literally! As the countdown begins, the excitement mounts.

I never cease to get butterflies in my stomach before they take to the stage, and this sensation never decreases despite how many times I see them. And before I start ranting on my soapbox about media influenced pop music, it’s wonderful watching a decent band, people who write all their own material, are all extremely accomplished musicians and sound incredible live. They don’t have to depend on choreographed dance steps, loads of lighting, Laser eye beam effects and polytechnics – their music and their personalities are all they need to keep the punters happy.

But for these musicians, budgets are tight, so when we can help them out by doing things like running their merchandise stall or turning up with things we know they’ve left behind, it seems like we’re contributing to their crusade. It’s good to feel useful!

We’d really love for this band to be huge and for everyone to have heard of them, though unfortunately they have a fair few fans who would like them to stay a well kept secret so that they carry on playing in intimate venues and can meet up with fans after every show. But as I have said to so many people, small venue shows don’t pay the rent, fund decent cars, finance the Laser eye surgery and knee operation that two of the band members need or most critically, give them any money to invest in promoting their music.

To go back to something I mentioned earlier, the music business today is far too interested in making a fast buck and has virtually no interest in nurturing musicians with potential because they take a longer period of time to make a name for themselves. It’s really sad to think that countless great musicians quit the industry because they cannot survive financially, whilst the music business throws ridiculous sums of money at the people who appear on television reality shows, spending millions on their ‘image’ – presumably cosmetic surgery, Laser eye treatment, hours with stylists, famous choreographers and almost inevitably the infamous autotune. But, naturally, it’s all about the music!

I’m visiting Wembley Arena on Friday. But I’m going to watch the support act. I’ve paid almost £30 just to enjoy forty minutes of great music. I definitely won’t bother to stay and see the headline act, because I’ve previously seen them at a festival and they did not impress me at all. Given the size of Wembley, I’ll probably wish I’d already had my Laser eye surgery performed as I know that my eyesight has got quite bad, so it’s likely that the money I’ve spent will allow me a blurred view of a few moving dots on stage, but it’s still essential to me that I show my support for the musicians I love.
