Yes, he did it again. After hearing Shatner belt out Mr. Tambourine Man and destroy The Beatles' Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds several years ago on The Transformed Man record (Also on the legendary Golden Throats album, along with some Leonard Nimoy classics), you would think he would have hung up his microphone. I mean, Shatner boldy went where he never ever should have gone. However, as horrible as they were, The Transformed Man and especially Golden Throats, were also hilarious and became comedy classics that had to be listened to over and over again to appreciate the genius that is Shatner. I still never thought I would hear another William Shatner album. I was wrong...
In that same spoken word style Shatner performed on his previous work, he deliver's Has Been. However, this is not the crazy, manic guy we heard before. No, this is serious stuff. In fact, Ben Folds produced the album and played the music that accompanies Shatner's vocal voyage through eleven compelling tracks. Did I just say compelling tracks? Yes! Together, Shatner and Folds crafted an album that is truly unique and not horrible at all. In fact, it's quite listenable. Guests, such as Henry Rollins, Joe Jackson and Brad Paisley also appear on the album. Treknerd rating:
"Highlights include the Rollins/Shatner rant I Can't Get Behind That and the Folds/Mann/Shatner collaboration That's Me Trying, which tells the painful story of an attempted family reconciliation. Shatner mixes a healthy amount of self-awareness with a just a dollop of self-mockery and then combines it all with plenty of raw vulnerability to create an effect that is surprisingly touching, highly entertaining, and unlike any music you've ever heard." --John Moe, Amazon.com
